You may retake TEF Canada, but you cannot take the same test again immediately. Candidates must wait at least 20 calendar days between attempts at the same TEF test.
Weekends and holidays are included, and changing to another test centre does not restart or avoid the rule.

What Does “20 Calendar Days” Mean?
Calendar days include Saturdays, Sundays, and statutory holidays. The rule is not 20 business days.
The waiting period also applies test by test. For example, if you took the speaking test on one date, you must respect the waiting period before taking the speaking test again.
A booking made inside the restricted period can be cancelled, and an invalid repeat may prevent the result certificate from being issued.
Important: If your timing is close, contact the test centre before paying. Do not assume that the booking system accepting your registration automatically proves that your test date satisfies the official waiting-period requirement.
Does the Rule Apply If You Use Another Test Centre?
Yes. The restriction applies regardless of the test centre.
Travelling from Brampton to another city does not allow an earlier attempt. Candidate identity information is part of the official examination record, so the rule is not limited to one centre’s local calendar.
Does a Missed Exam Remove the Waiting Period?
Do not assume that a no-show automatically creates a free replacement or an immediate new test date.
A missed session is handled under the test centre’s absence and cancellation policies. At CSA Toronto, candidates who arrive more than 30 minutes late are treated as absent without refund or rescheduling.

Do You Have to Retake All Four Abilities?
Federal immigration requires the compulsory TEF Canada abilities in the same session.
Before booking only one weak section, confirm whether the resulting attestation will be accepted for the specific purpose of your application.
Separate high scores from different certificates should not be assumed to be automatically combinable.
Should You Retake as Soon as You Are Eligible?
Being eligible to book another test does not necessarily mean you are ready to improve your score.
Use the waiting period to understand what actually limited your previous result. If one score was significantly lower than the others, consider whether the issue was:
- Language level
- Time management
- Task misunderstanding
- Exam-day anxiety
- Lack of familiarity with the current test format

A TEF result certificate is valid for two years from its issue date.
Candidates using a TEF result for immigration should consider both the certificate’s validity period and the stage at which the government requires a valid language test.
Planning a new attempt early can reduce pressure, but the 20-day waiting period still applies between test dates.
